Adopt A Dorm

Our nation’s migrant workers are the most heavily hit right now with COVID-19. To curb the spread, they have been confined to their living quarters or dormitories since 21 April 2020. This measure has surfaced challenges, with the most urgent being that many workers are not being provided with meals.

AGWO

The Alliance of Guest Workers Outreach (AGWO) –– an initiative of the Hope Initiative Alliance (HIA), has stepped in to fill this gap (find out more here and here). To continue better meeting this need, AGWO has come up with a programme, 'Adopt A Dorm', to provide holistic care, meals and other essentials to workers housed in factory-converted dormitories.

Our Brothers

We have adopted a dormitory consisting of 60 workers primarily from South India. The dormitory is located in an area in Tuas with known COVID-19 clusters. We took over the provision of our brothers’ daily meals from 15 May 2020, serving over 8,300 meals. Additionally, we are also supplying fresh fruits, snacks and beverages.

A Good Step Forward

Under the advisement of the Ministry of Manpower (MOM), we have transitioned the provision of meals for our brothers to their employer from 1 July 2020. Their employer has also dutifully stepped in with the necessary arrangements to ensure continuity.

The feeding programme may have ended but we remain committed to our brothers and the ‘Bless Our Dorm’ project will continue as an expression of our church’s care for them. Individuals and LifeGroups can continue to contribute food, snacks and even home bakes through this project.

Our team of volunteer drivers have been such a vital part of our connection with our brothers and a literal “driving force” for the Adopt A Dorm programme. They will be carrying on with providing deliveries for the ‘Bless Our Dorm’ project.

The Love Our City team is resolute to build a more focused and sustainable effort to befriend our brothers and are exploring more levels of engagement, in the coming weeks.
